While there are more extensive definitions around a DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) framework; at its core is Diversity, which is based on differences of characterized identities; Equity is about making sure people have what they need to be successful, which is fundamentally different from the concept of equality, which advocates that everyone should be treated the same; and Inclusion is about making sure individuals from diverse backgrounds feel valued and a sense of belonging. In order for these elements to work within any organizational structure, there must be a conscious responsibility of leaders and organizational members based on access to opportunity, respect, recognition of all perspectives, equity, and understanding the impact of not being included (excerpts from Draper et al., 2020).
The Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) section is purposely aimed at providing an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion through education, scientific scholarship and knowledge, engaging with members, increasing awareness, and advocating for change. These intentions are guided by an interconnected framework that is aimed at being engaged, inclusive, unbiased, and accessible. This allows for members to volunteer, be nominated, selected, and serve in leadership roles; and have an equal opportunity for society-wide and BSS section recognitions regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, and/or other identities.

DEI Resources
The DEI resources are the result of the BSS hosted Conversation Cafés. The Conversation Café is an informal discussion where GSA members come together for conversations on topics that are meaningful, timely, and relevant. This is a space where we encourage dialogue and share opinions and resources on various topics of interest. We are not only interested in discussing relevant issues, but we also aim to be solutions focused. This initiative is open to all GSA members.
